In the summer of 1992, Bill Bryson found himself on Martha's Vineyard, an island off the coast of Massachusetts. He had gone there with his family for a vacation, but he quickly realized that he was not cut out for the beach life. He was bored and restless, and he soon began to explore the island on his own.

Bryson's exploration of Martha's Vineyard led him to some unexpected places. He visited the island's many historical sites, he met its colorful characters, and he learned about its rich culture. He also had some adventures along the way, including a close encounter with a great white shark.

An Accidental Tourist is a funny, insightful, and heartwarming memoir about Bryson's summer on Martha's Vineyard. It is a book that will appeal to anyone who has ever felt like an outsider, or who has ever longed for a sense of belonging.
